EnviroTech Exterminating: Bed Bugs and Bed Bug Treatment, Control

Bed Bugs and Bed Bug Treatment Control Options

I often get asked about bed bug control and how to treat for them. I hear the common questions all the time.

1) Does Heat really work?
2) Do Chemicals really work?
3) Do You Offer Follow Up Treatments?
4) How Did I Get These?
5) Is It Safe?
6) What About Preparing For Treatment?

Although these questions seem simple the answer can be quite complex. People can find just about anything on the internet. Some things true and some things not so true. You can find Pro's, Con's and so forth about Heat and Treating Bed Bugs with Insecticides. In some cases Heat is a great option and in some cases Heat may not be all that effective. There is also always the cost factor in dealing with Bed Bugs. Heat can be very expensive where using chemical treatment may be more cost effective. This does not mean that one method is better or worse. It just means there are more than one way to treat for Bed Bugs.

EnviroTech Exterminating has had a great deal of success with the treatment of bed bugs in various structure types, even dwellings such as crawl space homes. Keep in mind that crawl space homes are typically older homes with a large amount of gaps and hiding spaces for pests such as bed bugs to harbor. A crawl space home also provides an extra challenge in that the bed bugs can always retreat if using heat. These pests can easily make their way into the crawl space or gain access to the attic with so many entry points available to them. This simple problem makes using heat sometimes less effective on crawl space dwellings.

Heat is a great tool in that it kills the bed bugs it comes into contact with but getting the heat to rise fast enough to get a 100% kill ratio and kill all bed bugs and eggs in a structure is where the problem exists. Other issues where heat can be a problem is in mobile homes or apartment buildings with multiple adjoining structures. Many of these homes simply cannot have the temperature taken to what is necessary for the Bed Bug kill zone of the heat. Wires can melt, the plastics used in these structures can become toxic. Heat in these situations sometimes do more harm than good. In some cases heat can be a great solution and in other cases chemical treatment may be the best solution. It is something the homeowner must consider when dealing with bed bugs.

The cost factor:  Heat is typically more expensive and even when heat is used some bed bugs can be missed, Why?  Heat may not get all the bed bugs in dwellings like crawl space homes. Heat has tremendous knock down power but if any bed bugs escape or are missed then you likely spent well over $1000 to find out a few weeks later that you still have bed bugs. In smaller dwellings on slab foundations heat may work well but you also risk other problems such as walls cracking as the heat pulls the moisture content from the sheetrock.

Chemical treatment relies on pesticides designed for the control and treatment of bedbugs. The products are applied with the idea much like that of a Perimeter Termite Treatment where the Bed Bugs litterally have to come into contact with the product, pesticide to get to the host thus killing the Bedbugs and controlling the bed bugs. All this comes as a direct result of the bed bugs getting into the residuals left behind. It can take more time to get the bedbugs under control but the costs are typically lower and since a residual is present it may potentially get Bedbugs that Heat Treatment may have missed. Multiple Treatments or Follow-Up Treatments may be needed to assure that all bed bugs, nymphs, eggs are killed. Typically products such as an IGR or Insect Growth Regulator that reduce the chance of bed bug reproduction are used and with proper application and following your treatment programs instructions bed bugs can become a thing of the past.

With either method re-infestation can occur. Bedbugs are known for the ways they spread and if you have bed bugs then you likely got them from somewhere. If you continue to visit the same places then the bedbug problem you are dealing may return. No amount of heat or pesticides can fix the problem if you don't help the problem by making sure you stay free of places that may or do have Bed Bugs.

Bedbug control requires habit changes sometimes. Some people get them from simply going to a movie or sitting in a chair somebody with bed bugs had been sitting in. Or maybe somebody that has bed bugs had one fall off their clothing onto the floor and you just so happen to have stopped in the same area. These are all factors we all deal with and they require a conscious effort on our part to make sure we don't bring bed bugs in. Keep a clutter free environment and pay attention to any signs that may be present of any Bed Bug activity.

There are many ways to get Bed Bugs. Simply going to places that don't know a problem is present can be all it takes. Many people may not even know they have Bed Bugs as about half of people show no allergic reaction to the bed bug bite.

Clutter and keeping your home messy can also be a huge factor in the effectiveness of any bed bug treatment program. You can have all the heat and all the pesticides but if the home is cluttered and a mess then bed bugs will likely win the battle.
